Networks of resistance, networks of inclusivity

Anita Lacey, Monash University

This paper addresses the attempts at broadening the level of inclusivity and participation in recent so-called global days of anti-capitalist protest, with a focus on J18 in London, through the use of Internet technologies. Theoretical perspectives on networks and communities of activism will be offered as well as empirical discussion of the use by activists of e-mail lists and bulletin boards to plan and orchestrate the days of activism in London in 1999. A particular focus will be the participation of the Intercontinental Caravan, a group of predominantly male activists from India, who were invited by London-based activists to participate in the actions and whose participation highlighted some of the inadequacies of the electronic networks for equitable and fully inclusive activist participation.Theme: Participation - promoting e-democracy in its broadest sense.
